FIDGET YOUR WAY TO HEALTH
According to Cambridge English Dictionary, Fidgeting means making continuous small movements that annoy other people. However, research shows that such short bursts of light intensity physical activity can improve fitness levels of people.
Scientists at Queen's University, Kingston,Ontario, Canada measured the duration and intensity of such movements and tested cardio-respiratory fitness levels of 43 men and 92 women who were inactive and abdominally obese.
They found that the intensity of the activity holds the key with a 30 minute increase in moderate physical activity through out the day offering fitness benefits.
The researchers reported that encouraging individuals to perform incidental physical activity is a favourable alternative that may result in positive health changes without requiring large time commitment or performing fatiguing physical activity.
The activities which could qualify as fidgeting include climbing stairs, doing house work, spring cleaning or simply just walking around office.
In the study, participants were made to wear an accelerometer on their right hip for a week to measure how long and how intensely they had moved. The researchers found that the average count was equivalent to that of walking at a slow leisurely pace of less than 5 Kms per hour and the physical activity accumulated intermittently was moderate and was like walking at a pace as comfortable as 5.8 Kms per hour.
SO FIDGET YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH.
