Island of Corsica is replete with stories of Ghjattu Volpe - the Cat Fox, a deadly mysterious animal which has been attacking the Goats and Sheep of the farmers of this mediterranean island of France. This forest cat was not caught for years together. What added to the mystery was the fact that there was no scientific record of the animal.
Wildlife officials began placing scent traps, a wooden contraption with a scented attractant, for catching the cat since 2008. In 2012, they managed to get good amount of animal's fur in one such trap and obtained a DNA sample. The first Fox-Cat was however, caught after 4 years in 2016. Since then the experts have caught, examined and released 12 of these cats out of the 16 spotted in the area.
These Golden Striped creatures which may be a new species of Fox-like Cat or Cat-like Fox, are slightly bigger than our usual house cats and have large ringed tails besides highly developed canine teeth. According to Scientists, these cats are a part of unknown species which could have originated in Africa or West Asia.
