GREEN TEA HEALTH BENEFITS
The effect of Oxidative stress on the Cells is well known. A recapitulation,
however, may be beneficial. Oxidative stress is a natural outcome of uptake of
energy by the Cells. When Oxygen is converted into energy by the Cells,
reactive molecules called Free- radicals are produced. These Free-radicals have
one unpaired electron which makes them highly reactive. Oxidative stress is
stated to occur when there are more Free-radicals than Anti-oxidants in the
body causing an imbalance. Being
extremely unstable, Free- radicals make chemical bonds with other molecules
which can result in damaging the DNA, Amino acids, Mitochondria etc., causing
diseases and fuelling aging process. In fact so potent is Oxidative stress at
times that it may lead to Cancer or other autoimmune diseases.
Anti-oxidants, compounds found in
food, are capable of stabilising Free- radicals by donating electrons to them.
Once the Free-radicals achieve stability, they do not bind with other
molecules. The obvious solution therefore is to introduce more Anti-oxidants in
the diet for reversing the imbalance caused in the system by the presence of
excess Free-radicals. Scientific
research has shown that among other things, Green Tea contains substances
called “Catechins” which are a family of anti- Oxidants capable of fighting
disease by donating electrons to the Free- radicals. It is also documented that
“Catechins” assist in protecting eyes against diseases like Glaucoma, etc. which
can result from Oxidative stress. Retina for instance can absorb Gallocatechin,
a class of “Catechins” found in Green Tea.
